Project Title: Long Distance Nationalism of Diasporas: A Study of Sikhs in the USA
Abstract of Project :
Any discourse on diaspora would remain incomplete without discussing the diaspora-homeland-hostland relation. Diasporic populations generally indulge in Long Distance Nationalism (LDN). The triadic relationship between diaspora-homeland-hostland becomes complex when diaspora starts supporting ethnic movements back home that is antagonistic to the interests of home state. It is precisely due to this intervention of diaspora that they have become a source of insecurity for both the homeland and hostland. The Sikhs in the USA are a peculiar case of diaspora with strong bonds with their homeland-Punjab from the colonial times. My Fulbright project will trace the long distance nationalism of the Sikh diaspora in the USA.
